...to give life from one's own.
A dusty black she-cat was lying on her side, resting silently within the bush that held the nursery. She hadn't been feeling so good today, and a nap seemed like the perfect cure. And she'd been right; it had worked... for a short time.
A soft pain began forming in her lower stomach. She ignored it at first, until a shudder erupted down her spine. Mintleaf's eyes flew open as she clawed at the earth, convulsing.
"O-Oceanflower!" She screeched, the pain racking her body.
(OOC: Want me to pm you what they look like, or...?)

ooc- Sure! bic- Oceanflower dashed into the nursery, carrying herbs. "Here, Mintleaf. Eat these," she said to the she-cat calmly. She had gone through enough kittings to keep her nerves when they began.

Mintleaf chewed up the foul tasting herbs enough to swollow, then sank back into her moss. The pain wouldn't fade for a little while, and already she felt exhausted. Another convulsion sent her into agony.
-lala birth lala-
The worn out queen let out a heaved sigh as she gazed at her kits. Hers. She couldn't be more proud; they were beautiful...
And then she noticed two weren't moving. She watched them for a second, switched her vision to the two kits suckling, then back to the still ones.
"Oceanflower?" She whispered, confused, "Why aren't they moving?" Didn't they want warmth?

Oceanflower frowned the Grey-and-white she-cat and the Brown-and-black tabby she-cat had both immediately gone to their mother. She touched the Brown tabby she-cat and gasped. The kit was cold. She quickly touched the black tom. He too was cold. Oceanflower turned to Mintleaf with sad eyes. "I'm sorry, Mintleaf," she said, "but they are dead."
ooc- lol. I like how you did the birth part.

(I know, right? ;] )
"Dead?" Mintleaf echoed, eyes blank. They were... dead? The words didn't make sense. The queen nudged the black one, trying vainly to make him move.
Finally reality crept up on Mintleaf, and her eyes narrowed in grief. "No, oh no!" She yowled, staring at Oceanflower pleadingly, as if the medicine cat could bring them back to life. Anguish rampaged through her for what seemed like hours, but was only a few minutes, until finally she could think coherent thoughts. She would save her grieving for the next day, and then yowl her heart out.
"Well," Mintleaf murmured quietly, "They need names." She eyed her children carefully, thinking.
"This one," She ran her tail over the grey-and-white one, "Will be Ashkit. The other will be Oak-kit. "And the two others will be Smallkit and Nightkit." She finished, becoming quiet.

"Very good names," murmured Oceanflower, putting a comforting tail on Mintleaf's shoulder. "You mustn't grieve for too long, Mintleaf. Askkit and Oak-kit need you. You must stay strong for them," she looked at the grieving mother with simpathy, "I will bury Smallkit and Nightkit." She gently picked up the two kits and left.
Sunny (the fox who had been staying in the nursery under Frostfeather's care) had watched with wide eyes. He crept over and asked, "When can they play with me, Featherkit, Glorykit, Flashkit, and Glitterkit?"

Mintleaf half-heartedly listened to the medicine cat's kind words, staring after her until Sunny spoke up.
"Ah... about a moon or two, I suppose..." She murmured, casting a soft smile in his direction, "But for a while they'll need to be left alone."
(Don't really know bout the moon thing; we haven't had kittens at my house in a while...)
Mintleaf was tired, but she wasn't ready to sleep yet. Odd enough, she wanted to stay awake and watch her kits. Tail wrapping around them protectively, she got into a comfortable position, and let out a small sigh.

Sunny watched the kits for a moment then was board by it. "Well, what CAN they do then?" he asked, curious. he had never seen anything so small. He was suprised they were smaller than him.

Mintleaf laughed quietly. "They eat and sleep, mostly." She smiled.

Sunny sighed, wishing the others were awake. "What's it like?" he blurted out suddenly, "Being a warrior, I mean..."

"What's it like?" Sunny blurted out suddenly, "Always having lived in a clan, I mean..."

Mintleaf thought for a minute, concidering... "Well..," She began slowly, choosing her words, "As a warrior, you help everyone in your clan. You protect those who can't protect themselves, you hunt for those who can't and yourself, and you fight for what you believe in. Being in a clan... you help each other. You don't argue or fight -- well, normally -- about mousebrained things, and you're a family. " She decided that summed it up enough, and she she let out a soft purr as her eyes drifted to her kits again.

Sunny sighed. "Foxes aren't like that..." He stared at the kits. "You can never trust anyone who isn't in your family, and even then you could get back stabbed by a brother or sister. Sometimes the only reason foxes join to gether is to kill for pleasure. The weak die and the strong live, and it's everyone for themselves. And they hate cats, and hate anyone who is nice to cats. Your kits, and my freinds," he flicked his tail at Frostfeather's kits, "have I very low chance of survivial in those conditions. My brother and sister didn't survive..."

Mintleaf felt a shudder ripple over her spine. "I'd like any fox to try and hurt my kits." She hissed lowly, eyes suddenly fierce. Then she softened her guys and looked apologetically at Sunny, for both acting angry and his siblings' death.
"It was hard." Not a question; a statement. She thought for a few more moments, then spoke once more.
"Do you like it here?"

Sunny sighed. "It's nice. Nice than any place I've ever lived, but I'm a fox. You're all cats. I can see the looks I get when they don't think I'm looking. I'm a fox, living with cats, but I was also raised by one, and that makes me wonder. Do I really belong here? Do I belong anywhere? Featherkit, Glorykit, Glitterkit and Flashkit seem to accept me, and so does Frostfeather. But do you? What would your kits think? What does everyone else think?"
